Crash Landing of "Angel of Mercy"

Its landing gear damaged by flak, Angel of Mercy comes in for a crash landing.

These photos from James McLean show the aircraft and its crew immediately after the belly landing. The following information comes from James McLean: "'Angel of Mercy,' #982, belly landed on April 19, 1945 at Fano, Italy, base for the 310th Bombardment Group after a mission to bomb the Rovereto RR Bridge. It was piloted by William McMillan, co-pilot Walter McLean (my older brother). The tail gunner A.S. Hatfield was wounded. McMillan received a DFC for bringing the ship home. Unfortunately McMillan and McLean were killed on June 9 while shooting night landings in preparation for flying home. On the right is a picture of the crew after the belly landing - minus the tail gunner. Angel crew l to r: Gunner R. E. Wilson or K. G. Mueller, bombardier W. W.
