Thanks to Don Kaiser, Dominique Taddei and especially George Underwood for providing information and insight to Form 1-A. George Underwood responded on questions about Form 1-A and explains red and white mission marks with the help of his friend LT. W.F. BIERDS (ret) "...Toggalier. He had no bombardier and had a FO (Flight Officer) dropping bombs (toggling) off the lead ship as we did all the time. Only the lead ship in the box of 6 had a bombardier and a bombsight and as the lead ship opened his bomb bay doors so did the Toggalier, when the lead dropped the Toggalier 'toggled' his load of bombs. He, interestingly, spelled it Toggladier on the airplane. Ginny is his wife's name." [Concerning the] bombing missions...the aircraft flew some 130 combat missions and the different color indicted the 'extra' missions over 100. So there are 100 total bombs painted and 30 in white meaning that they are the 'extra' 30 over 100" |

According to historian Dominique Taddei, this aircraft flew with the 381st BS, 310th BG. Although we haven’t found the specific number of missions, we know she flew through most of 1944 and survived long enough to be stationed on Corsica at the end of the year. George Underwood supplied a copy of the 381st BS Mission Schedule on May 28, 1944 which shows 2nd Lt. E. L. Gimson as pilot, Pvt. J. L. Bazette as bombardier. Underwood, a turret gunner in the 381st, says that Bazette tended to get into trouble. He made S/Sgt twice, but at the time of this flight, was reduced to Private. We believe “Lou” flew alongside “Form 1A” on a number of missions and have in-flight photos from the squadron and the ramp shot above. The unusual tail markings, with the yellow and red band, were unique to the 381st BS. |
