A female Anna's Hummingbird began building a nest in our yard in San Diego, California around
the beginning of March, 2003. This is the story of her family in pictures.

In the summer of 2002, we discovered this hummingbird nest in our yard. At the time it was
hard to imagine even a family of hummingbirds being raised in such a tiny nest.

By late winter new fern branches began to unfurl and in the beginning of March, a
female Anna's Hummingbird began building a new nest on one of the new fern branches.

The mother made the nest using moss, lichens, spider web silk, and lint from a clothes dryer exhaust.

The nest grew noticeably larger and stronger everyday.

By March 8th the nest appeared complete and soon there were two white eggs in it which I did not photograph.
