The mother Anna's Hummingbird had already made this much progress on her new nest by February 24, 2004.
For at least the third year in a row what we believe to be the same female Anna's hummingbird has returned to the same fern in our yard to build a nest and raise her babies. Above is the first picture I took of the nest on February 24, 2004. This year's nest-building started about two weeks earlier than last year. We didn't observe last year's nest until March 5, 2003 and it seemed to take longer to build than the 2-3 days needed to construct this year's nest. Indeed, there was already one egg in this year's nest by February 29th.

On Februray 29th we noticed the first of two eggs in the nest.
We noticed one single white egg in the nest on February 29th.

The mother seemed to spend more of her time on the nest.
Once the egg was layed, the mother seemed to spend more time on her nest.

We were concerned that there might only be one baby this year since there was only one egg even about week later.
There was still only a single egg in the nest nearly a week after we noticed the first one, so we thought that's all there would be this year.

Finally, we discovered a second egg in the nest on March 10.

Finally we discovered a second egg in the nest.
Since we weren't checking everyday, the second egg could have been layed anytime during the preceding few days.
