It's late February in 2005 and this marks the 4th year in a row that we have observed a mother Anna's
hummingbird nesting in an Australian tree fern here in San Diego, CA. We have no way of knowing if it's the same mother
who nests in the fern every year, but it's certainly possible since Annas can live for at least 7 years.
The series of photographs below will show the building of the nest day-by-day starting on February 24 and ending on February 28, 2005.
This year the mother started to build one nest (on the right in photos above)
but then she decided to construct another nest a little higher up on the branch.
This second nest is the one she spent all of her time working on and which seems to be "the nest."
This is the first year we observed this.
