For the past 7 years (2002-2008), an Annas Hummingbird built at least one nest in an Australian
Tree Fern in our yard (see links below). Because there isn't very much data about the life-spans
and timing of Annas Hummingbird nesting events (nest-building, egg-laying, hatching, fledging, etc.)
in the wild, the analysis of this information could be interesting or useful.
For at least the past two years, new nests have appeared in a different tree
(Chiflera) located about 10 yards from the Australian Tree Fern. Below are a few photos of this
year's (2009) nest.
This picture shows the 2009 Annas Hummingbird nest a few weeks after the babies flew away.
My neighbor wanted to use the nest for a Girl Scout project, so I cut it down out of the
Chiflera tree. Some of the pictures below show the nest from below while the baby hummingbirds were still in it.
